GGG COMPETITION RESULTS & NEWS 2010
Gloucestershire Girls are South West South West Champions!
The Gloucestershire Girls' Team won the SW Inter-counties tournament at Chippenham Golf Club on August 18th and 19th. The format was a round-robin tournament between four counties: Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. Each inter-county match consisted of six singles matches played off handicap.
Captained by Claire Wenman, Gloucestershire finished unbeaten after wins over Devon and Cornwall and a halved match with Wiltshire. Cornwall took second place.
With an age range from 17 to 12 and a handicap range from 2 to 12, the team was: Claire Wenman (Cotswold Edge), Bethan Brown (The Kendleshire), Jemima Gregson and Shelby Smart (Knowle), Bethan Popel (Long Ashton), Alexandra Saunders (Bristol & Clifton), Jessica Stephens (Lilley Brook), & Victoria Wakeley-Jones (Cotswold Edge).
The team played very well. Many hard fought games reached the 17th or 18th and several games were pulled back from the brink of defeat after our players were down in the early stages. A very gritty performance. Team manager, Di Valentine, was kept busy rescuing trolleys when the batteries failed, finding lost sweaters and providing sticking plasters!
The girls’ commitment to the team and to each other was well illustrated by Captain Claire Wenman who played the first match, went home to receive her A level results, and returned for the final game having achieved the grades she needed to confirm her place at Birmingham University!
Congratulations to the Team …... and to all connected with the training of our future stars!

June Stableford at Stinchcombe Hill

The girls in the up to 36 handicap group were able to complete 18 holes but the rest of the handicap girls were brought in after 13 holes. The prehandicap girls including a group of six and seven year olds performed very well. As usual scores were good and the girls of all ages demonstrated some excellent golf.
