1st Team Match v Worcestershire & Herefordshire at Stourbridge GC Sunday 17th April 2011
An excellent start to the season! Stourbridge Golf Club was the venue this year and a very pretty course is was too. The greens may not have been at there best and made for some very frustrating 3 putts but it was after all the same for both sides!
The morning foursomes were a very even affair ending 2-2. Our 2 young stars Shelby Smart (Knowle) and Bethan Popel (Long Ashton) teamed up for the first time proper in the first foursomes match and had a great match winning on the 17th against some very experienced players, one of whom, Sarah Cranton, is currently Lady Captain at Stourbridge. Ali Kelly (Cirencester) and yours truly had a bit of a wayward start going 4 down early. Despite a good fight back a birdie, birdie finish from our opponents left us beaten on the 16th. Corrinne Durber (Minchinhampton) and Fiona Hudman (Tewkesbury Park) faired similarly with Jan Pickersgill (Henbury) and Helen Palmer (Ross-on-Wye) putting up a very gritty performance to take a closely fought game on the 17th.
The afternoon singles saw a fresh Jo Hodge (Knowle) blazing a trail with a fine win of 6&5 over the Lady Captain Sarah. Bethan Popel and Ali Kelly followed suit with 2 good wins 3&2. Helen unfortunately lost out to one of their up coming youngsters, as did Corrinne but Jan fought back bravely to get a well earned half. Fiona Hudman brought home the winning point with another good 3&2 win and bringing up the rear, Shelby Smart as usual fought to the bitter end, playing a very fine bunker shot on the last to 12 inches to seal her match 1up and an overall result of 7 ½ to 4 ½ .
A very fine win on a lovely sunny day - lets hope this bodes well for the matches to come.

Gloucestershire won the match |
1st team vs. 2nd Team at Minchinhampton GC on 3rd April 2011
A new fixture to our calendar this year and a great start to the season with the added input from ex tour pro Kirsty Taylor.
We started the day with an introduction from Kirsty on how best to prepare for a match. Drawing on her own personal experience it was a great insight for all the players. She then proceeded to walk 4 holes with each group, looking at course management and giving helpful tips on certain shots and then followed up with a review session after the game.
The point of the match was also to get as many players together as possible and to have a friendly 4 ball better match off handicap which also gave myself a great opportunity to see how everyone was getting on with their game and to get some good match play practice at the same time.
The match result was a very fitting 2-2 draw for this inaugural fixture.
Jo Hodge and Lucy Padley (Knowle) beat Fiona Hudman (Tewksbury Park) and Alex Saunders (Bristol & Clifton) 4&3. Bethan Popel and Shelby Smart had a very close tussle with Bethan Brown (The Kendleshire) and Louise Church (Henbury) winning 1up. Holly Marven (Lilleybrook) and Glo Slatter (Tewkesbury Park) just got the better of Ali Kelly (Cirencester) and Olwen Simpson (Filton) 1up and our youngest player Victoria Wakely Jones teamed up with Helen Palmer (Ross-on-Wye) to beat Jemima Gregson (Knowle) and Corrinne Durber (Minchinhampton) 2&1.
A very enjoyable day that I believe everyone enjoyed and I think will prove a very useful addition to the fixture list.

MATCH HALVED |
1st Team Match v Broadway Men's League Team at Broadway GC Saturday 19th March 2011

The first match of the 2011 season was a closely fought battle on the top of the hill at Broadway GC. The weather could not have been better – a crisp bright sunny day which did cause a little concern as we had a few temps due to the frosty weather. These however were gone by the time we had played the front 9.
Newcomers Lucy Padley (Knowle GC) and Olwen Simpson (Filton GC) started off the morning foursomes with Shelby Smart and Ali Kelly respectively so they could be shown round the course by the more experienced players on this course. Shelby and Lucy had a great game winning 2 up and Ali and Olwen went down to the wire narrowly losing 1 down on the 18th green.
Jan Pickersgill (Henbury GC) and Corrine Durber (Minchinhampton GC) teamed up with our two younger players Jemima Gregson (Knowle GC) and Alex Saunders (Bristol & Clifton GC) as we tried a bit of age and experience combined with youth and enthusiasm! Unfortunately a few wayward drives left Jan and Jemima with a little too much work to do losing 4&3. Corrinne and Alex faired better with a great win 4&3 and so it was all even after the morning foursomes.
The afternoon followed the usual formant of playing singles in fourballs to keep pace of play with the course as the fine weather had certainly got the members out in force!
Shelby showed no mercy beating her opponent 3&2, whilst Jemima bringing up the rear scored the only other win of the afternoon with a fine display of power, hitting a monster drive up the par 4 15th to within 2 feet of the pin! Olwen and Alex lost their matches but Lucy, Ali and Corrinne all halved their matches leaving us unfortunately just short of the points needed to win.
The overall result was 6 ½ to 5 ½ in favour of the men, but I can honestly say it was one of the closest matches we have had in a while against them, played in great spirit and all credit to both sides for putting up a great fight. Despite losing it was a good start to the season with some really gritty performances and a great introduction for the newer members of the side.
