FIRST TEAM RESULTS 2010
PRACTICE MATCHES
1st Team Match v Bristol & Clifton Men's League Team at B &C 29th May 2010
The near-perfect record of sunny days for 1st team training days as well as matches couldn’t last forever and it broke on the 29th May at B&C. The rain lashed down in the morning accompanied by strong gusts of wind making playing conditions both difficult and unpleasant. This, coupled with Bank Holiday traffic down the M5, didn’t make for an ideal start to the match.
Only Bethan Popel & Karen Rix managed a win in the morning foursomes and even this match went to the 18th. Alex Saunders & Zoe Edwards were unlucky to lose on the 18th and both the other matches (Linda Carruthers playing with Shelby Smart, and Claire Wenman playing with Corrinne Durbar) got as far as the 17th so they were all close.
The afternoon saw both the weather and our team fare much better and good wins from Corrinne Durbar, Alex Saunders, Bethan Popel & Shelby Smart lifted the spirits and made us think we might pull off an unlikely win. In the end, though, it was down to the last match of Zoe Edwards against 4-handicapper Greg Gough. Zoe almost chipped in on the last hole but managed a par but Greg won with a magnificent birdie so the scores were level in the singles at 4-4 but this meant a victory of 7-5 to the B&C men.

B&C men won the match |
1st Team Match v Broadway Men's League Team at Broadway GC 24th April 2010
Yet another lovely day greeted us for this match. Due to a clash with the Scottish Open where Hannah, Charlotte & Sian were playing, as well the Hampshire Rose Bowl which involved Bethan plus Shelby’s injury, my regular 1st team was rather depleted. However it gave us an opportunity to offer Zoe Edwards from South Herefordshire, Claire Wenman from Cotswold Edge, Alex Saunders from B&C, & Jemima Gregson from Knowle, their first match for the 1st team. Other players were stalwarts Karen Rix, Helen Palmer, Su Worthington, Fiona Hudman & Vicky Watkins.
The morning foursomes started badly and I really thought we were going to have a repeat of the thrashing that Broadway meted out to our team last year. However, our team showed its gritty nature and were clawing back by the halfway stage and then went on to make a clean sweep of every match! A wonderful victory, especially for the newcomers to the team who learnt a great deal about course management from their more senior, experienced partners.
We knew the men would be hell bent on revenge in the afternoon and sure enough, the first three matches went to Broadway but a gutsy half from Zoe Edwards stopped the rot and Su Worthington and Alex Saunders provided the vital two wins which was all we needed for an overall victory, albeit by the narrowest of margins - half a point!

Gloucestershire Ladies won the match |
1st Team Match v Worcestershire & Herefordshire Ladies at Tewkesbury Park GC 18th April 2010
A simply glorious day for our friendly match against Worcestershire was matched by the warmth of the hospitality shown by Tewkesbury Park and especially by their Ladies’ Captain Christine Williams & Glo Slatter who, with the support of the Ladies’ Section, greeted us all with complimentary tea and coffee.
A clash with other tournaments, various injuries and university studies had all resulted in a severely depleted 1st team. However I was very proud of my girls who fought tooth and nail in every match against stronger opposition.
The morning foursomes were Bethan Popel & Corrinne Durbar, Louise Church & Jan Pickersgill and Judy Thomas & Fiona Hudman. At one stage it looked as though it was going to be a whitewash but then the fightback started. Bethan & Corrinne came back strongly to win 2 up and Jan & Louise, having been 4 down at the turn, also won 2 up. The third match did their best but Anna Rock who plays off 1 was on stunning form.
The singles saw Bethan take on the experienced Sarah Cranton, four shots better than Bethan on handicap. Bethan did her best but was beaten 4&3. Jan Pickersgill took no notice of Anna Rock’s morning form and, despite stumbling at the start, won her match 4&3. Fiona Hudman was 2 down on the tee of the16th but ended victoriously on the 18th! Sadly we couldn’t scrape another win despite valiant efforts especially from Corrinne Durbar, so it was a narrow victory of 5-4 to Worcestershire. Congratulations to Netty Kitson, Captain of Worcestershire. The match was played in a very sporting, friendly spirit.
Thanks to Tewkesbury Park, and in particular Declan Healey, for giving us courtesy of the course and doing his best to ensure we had enough of a buffer in front of our tee times.
