The Lady Captains of 2004 keep in touch with each other by meeting up each year for a fun day of golf.
This year the venue was Dewstow and 11 of the 2004 Lady Captains enjoyed a warm day, reasonable golf
and good food.
The Lady Captains 2004 Society was started by Linda Lee as a celebration of that year and started
with 12 Lady Captains from around the county. The circulation list now has 20 Lady Captains
from 2004 and hopefully will continue to grow as we get to know more 2004 Lady Captains.
If anyone would like to start a similar social occasion for their year then please contact
Pat Jackson (our secretary) who will be only too willing to forward your details to the other captains
in that year group, so they may contact you direct.
REPORT ON THE SUMMER MEETING HELD AT THE KENDLESHIRE MONDAY 6th JUNE 2011
A bright sunny day dawned on 6th June after a mixed forecast and, with fingers crossed for clement weather to continue – which it did - 76 ladies took part from 20 of Gloucestershire’s clubs. We were able to take advantage of the fewer numbers with a 2-tee start which allowed tee-times between 9am and 10.44, thus nearly everyone stayed for the prize giving.
Lady Captain, Sue, had wonderful support from her ladies and staff at The Kendleshire who manned the reception desk, raffle prizes, inputted results on the computer and, thankfully, ball spotters were at all of the necessary places around the course. That said, we didn’t hear of too many balls being claimed by the water holes, although it may be that this was being kept under the “hat” as there were a “few” nil returns!
Afterwards there was a very relaxed and sociable atmosphere and it was lovely to see so many people taking advantage of the sunshine with a glass of wine or two on the terrace overlooking the 18th green.
Those inside were inevitably transfixed by the ever changing television screen as results were coming in and the Gross, Nett and Stableford results were continually being displayed. We felt quite professional although I’m not sure that our scores will be taking us to the European Tour … just yet! These computerised results were a great success however and saved a lot of time preparing the end results.
The course was in excellent condition, the food was enjoyed by all and the day could be summed up as a great success due in large part to the hard work and organisation of our Captain Sue and The Kendleshire Club for hosting such an enjoyable event. Thank you!

MATCH REPORTS
Match Report GLCGS v Gloucestershire Mens' Captains
The Kendleshire Golf Club - Monday 12th September 2011
Keen to get started but with forecast uncertain I arrived at the club early to ensure that the changing rooms were ready for my team of ladies.
Getting out of the car I was buffeted by a wind which threatened to develop into a gale but at least appeared to be keeping the rain at bay.
Mind you I was not first there as the Kendleshire captain for 2004, Mike Holder had travelled up from Tiverton to play with Eric Millard, my mixed partner
to make the day extra special for me.
With cards sorted the pairings indicated some excellent matches with 3 of our ladies playing off scratch. This was indeed the case as at least 3 of the matches
went to the last and in the case of Mary and Jan to the very last putt. This is how all matches should be if handicaps and tees are correctly used when playing
against the men.
In my own match it was nip and tuck all the way to the 16th and it was a misjudgement with regards to wind direction and speed that gave us the chance to win the
game on the 17th. If anyone saw me dancing my way to the green it was because I had got over at my first attempt and it ensured we were dormy 2. I had chosen
my partner well as Frances had been encouraging me all the way as well as demonstrating how the holes should be played.
Two games were over fairly early as a couple of players were having a “purple patch” and Eric, my mixed partner, got cut by 2 at Naunton Downs later in the week,
winning a prestigious trophy for men captains!
The final result was 6½-1½ to the ladies. Well done to you all, glad to find out that we can play in a wind as strong as that.
The men were gracious in defeat, purchasing wine for the meal and I think they have forgiven me for my faux pas at the beginning which was amiably sorted out by some of the more experienced captains present.
Match report GLCGS v Gwent Past Lady Captains
South Herefordshire Golf Club - Tuesday 6th September 2011
My usual weather forecast watching on the net convinced me that it would dry out around the Ross area before the first tee off time, but many of my team were not quite as optimistic judging by texts received.
Driving up the motorway with wipers going full pelt and no view of any break in the cloud cover I maintained my optimistic outlook and was rewarded with sighting some blue patches as we headed west from Gloucester along the A40.
Arriving at the club in plenty of time we got out of the car and were nearly blown off our feet by gale force winds, but no rain. The majority of the Gwent team arrived in a mini bus at the same time and we entered the clubhouse just as the South Herefordshire ladies were about to decamp , they had decided that they would not face the horrendous conditions as the rain had only just cleared and the bunkers and greens had flooded.
Thank goodness for the enthusiasm of their captain Val, who had not just organised a starter and helpers to guide us round the course, but had moved us into the men’s changing rooms ensuring those essential feminine touches, such as hairdryers, were in place.
The welcome from the staff was brilliant and Alex not only provided us with sandwiches but added some chips to warm us through before we set out into the wind. We were blown up the first as Brian, the starter, advised us of the condition we might find (we had decided that if bunkers were flooded we would take a free drop) and we were on our way. They were quite right to allocate Brian and Tony to ensure we did not get lost on certain holes. It was a matter of trying to keep your ball under the wind on many fairways. The greens and bunkers had drained and the wind was drying them out very rapidly but had left the bunkers flat and wet (not full of water as we expected).
By the time the first four arrived on the 18th to halve our match we felt battered by the wind and the temperature had started to drop so were glad of the hot showers available. We hoped that the rain would hold off until all 8 groups were in but a few did get slightly damp unfortunately and some were really cold by the time they arrived back in the clubhouse, so coffee and tea were the main drinks ordered as we waited for the meal.
Alex provided us with Salmon Wellington followed by a delicious lemon/pineapple cheesecake with fresh cream. Considering there were only our two teams in the clubhouse the laughter and cheerful banter echoed and filled the whole building. If you don’t already know South Herefordshire it is well worth a visit for the welcome, the food, the challenging course and the views over the surrounding countryside.
Thank you to the whole team especially my last minute reserves Jacky, Rhona and Chris; winning 5-3 in those conditions was brilliant.
Match report GLCGS v Wiltshire Past Lady Captains
Cumberwell Park Golf Club - Wednesday 31st August 2011
A slightly dubious outlook for the day and many of us donned sweaters whilst waiting in the clubhouse, but fortunately the weather did improve during the day.
Having munched our way through delicious sandwiches we prepared to enter the fray and thanks to the starter’s timely appearance, as we read out the pairings, we managed to find our way to the first tee. The combination of orange and blue courses confused us all, but once underway we found our tees comparatively easily although which direction to hit led to longer walks to discover the whereabouts of a couple of the greens. It was difficult to judge distances without many trees on this area of reclaimed land, but the views were brilliant from the highest fairways.
The second nine was more familiar to several players as this was part of the original 18 holes and with well established greens to putt on we could not blame the newness of the course for our discrepancies.
Close matches were the order of the day, but it was the 15th that was the deciding hole for several matches not the 16th, which was the one I thought would be the decider, as the carry over the water on that par 3 is quite formidable. For the first time this year I was waiting for the last ones to come up the 18th with bated breath as we were one down, the last pairing ended with an honourable half, so we just lost, but what a brilliant atmosphere in the clubhouse as we sat down to a well deserved meal.
Beautifully presented lasagne, salad and garlic bread went down a treat after a tiring round followed by a tropical roulade and delicious chocolate nibbles with our coffee.
I thoroughly enjoyed my day leading out some very enthusiastic captains and was glad I had so many volunteers for this match as needed 6 of the original reserves due to various problems that arose throughout the summer. Many thanks to the team and well played.
Match Report GLCGS v Brickhampton Ladies
Brickhampton Golf Club - Thursday 11th August 2011
“The Captains Challenge” and the day dawned wet and miserable; a reminder of last year at Bristol & Clifton! Would the trend continue with foul weather to spoil the day?
Until we got to the Stroud turn off on the M5 it was miserable but then all appeared dry and stayed that way until we left the car, when it began again! Always nervous until the team is signed in and the cards completed, I was on edge, but Debbie stated that all would be well and it would be fine.
Sure enough after delicious, substantial sandwiches Debbie donned her “sunhat” and we were off amidst lots of chuckles and in her case lots of trees! Yes the sun stayed out and it was hot! The fairways looked as though they had had no rain for ages and this led to some fantastically long shots, but also some interesting bounces leading to visits to trees and bunkers galore.
There was a lot of laughter and friendly competition around the course with the added challenge of nearest the pins, instigated by Debbie. These proved difficult with the well watered greens and edges causing problems for chipping and putting.
Back at the clubhouse cool drinks were welcomed as we awaited the rest of our teams. Many matches were close going to the last hole, which was brilliant, but after a truly scrumptious meal I was able to announce a win by the GLCGS captains over the challengers 6-2. Well done team and thanks for supporting your captain yet again.
Brickhampton ladies were extremely gracious hosts; special thanks to Debbie for organising the match; perhaps we have now bucked the trend that Penny referred to at the AGM with regard to this fixture, let’s hope so.
Match report GLCGS v Dorset ex-captains
Knowle Golf Club - Tuesday 19th July 2011
Yet again the forecast was rather “iffy” but I maintained that we would get through in the dry each time I was asked!
Well we nearly did, a slight drizzle as the first group reached their 4th hole made us reach for coats and umbrellas but it was soon fine again and in fact rather muggy at times and the umbrellas were made use of as sunshades at times.
Despite problems negotiating road works and locating the club (in some cases) all were there for sandwiches at 12 and raring to go. Partners introduced and we were off. Starting at the first, an error by me, actually meant that we ended up with a 2 tee start, which ensured that we were all in by 6 ready for our meal.
The course was in fabulous condition, with speedy greens and fairways playing long. The matches ended up being extremely close as handicaps were fairly similar in most groups, making it a real challenge for some of the ladies.
Mind you the trees appeared to come into play rather too often for some of our ladies. One player reported that having hit one of her best shots of the day it travelled at least 50 yards before hitting the smallest tree ever in the world and then disappeared from sight only seconds later to fall to the ground behind her; quite a feat I feel. It was amazing that she did not manage to hit one of the many squirrels that were ignoring us completely as they raced across the fairways. Some were also lucky enough to spot deer as well.
It was great to hear so many compliments about the course as Knowle is one of my favourites as a visiting player, although the length of the par 4s is quite daunting, as is the hill on the first hole.
If you enjoyed the course then do look on the Knowle website for their competitions next year!
Our appetites sated with good food –those pavlovas, oh so moreish; results were announced by the visiting captain – we halved (won 3, lost 3 and halved 2). Well done ladies!
