ROSS-ON-WYE PAIR WIN FRASER FOURSOMES
(July 16th 2010)
Ross-on-Wye ladies were well to the fore at yesterday’s 36-hole nett Fraser Foursomes competition played, as always, at Stinchcombe Hill GC. Not only were the winners, Amanda Marshall & Helen Palmer, from Ross, but four of their club colleagues battled for the afternoon best nett prize with Kerry Welding & Jan Armstrong just pipping Shan Powell & Anne McArthur on a countback.
Rain and wind swept the course, bringing new concerns for the greens staff – a week ago they may have been worrying about the heat and lack of rain, but before play yesterday they were out with the squeegies clearing the greens.
But Gaye Pope (Cotswold Hills) didn’t need to worry about the greens – well, not on the par 3 11th hole anyway! There she scored a hole-in-one, the third in her golfing career, but ….”None of us saw the ball drop, which I suppose was a bit sad,” she said.

PAULA KEANEY WINS WESTERN DAILY PRESS
Bristol & Clifton’s Paula Keaney won the Western Daily Press Cup when the competition was played at Long Ashton GC on last Wednesday (June 9th).
Delighted with her win she admitted that her normal role was to bring in the winner ….. not make it to the top herself!
When presenting the prizes County President Di Honey noted the reduced entry for this prestigious trophy. This year it attracted only 62 entries, well below the usual 100 plus.
Results:
Western Daily Press Cup: Paula Keaney with 38 points
Silver Division: 1st Karen Preedy (The Kendleshire) 37, 2nd Suzette Worthington (Bristol & Clifton) 36, 3rd Julia Wilde (Ross-on-Wye) 35.

History, from A Celebration of Ladies’ Golf in Gloucestershire
WESTERN DAILY PRESS CUP: Presented by the Western Daily Press & Bristol Mirror in 1933, although we tended to call it the Times and Mirror Cup for some time! We also imposed a handicap limit of 30 on entrants after its first playing – that first competition was won by a 32 handicap player with a player of 33 handicap coming second. Phyllis Whitley, handicap 5, was third. Enough said!
Originally a 36 hole nett competition, with various sweeps to make play interesting for all handicaps, it is now an 18 hole stableford, with the winner coming from either division

But spare a thought for the Broadway team of Pat Righton, Chris Moulder and Pam Hooper. They started in the morning and waited for the presentations knowing that, with a score of 69, they were in with a shout for the prizes….. that is, until the final team, the winners, posted their score of 76!
