RESULTS FOR COUNTY COMPETITIONS 2011
Watson Williams and County Foursomes Results 2011
FINALS DAY ….. IN THE CLOUDS
Cotswold Hills and Ross-on-Wye were comfortable winners of the Watson Williams and County Foursomes respectively when the finals were played at Stinchcombe Hill GC at the weekend.
In the Watson Williams, the scratch foursomes, Val Smith and Sam Round from Cotswold Hills, defeated Minchinhampton’s Frances Lindley and Sue Heathcote 4/2. They finished in style with a fine birdie on the 16th after Minchinhampton had chipped in for their par from well off the green.
Broadway’s Vicky Watkins and Pauline O’Hagan were playing catch-up from the start giving seven shots to Sarah Forrest and Kerry Welding from Ross in the County Foursomes, the handicap version of the game. The Ross ladies also finished this match on the 16th, winning 3/2.
And all players – and the few brave spectators, not to mention the stalwart caddies and referees! – had to battle foul weather as well! High on the escarpment, Stinchcombe Hill certainly showed its teeth throwing high winds and swirling low clouds and mist into the equation!

The Bronze Lady Marling Cup and the Bronze Coronation Medal, were won by Irene White from Chipping Sodbury GC – who was delighted that Filton, unlike her home course, provided little in the way of water hazards!

Kitcat Cup held at Minchinhampton (New GC) on Friday 9th September
Margaret Morse, playing on her home course, won the County Kitcat Cup played on the Cherington Course at Minchinhampton Golf Club on Friday (September 9th) – but the result went down to the wire, only being decided on a countback.
She and Trisha Gould (Broadway), both of whom incidentally have only relatively recently started playing golf, both scored 40 stableford points.

Silver Division: 1st Barbara Watson (Naunton Downs) 36 on cb from 2nd Chris Park (Cirencester), 3rd Frances Lindley (Minchinhampton New) 34
Historical Note: From A Celebration … of Ladies’ Golf in Gloucestershire
KITCAT CUP: Presented in 1905 by the Rev. Kitcat, father of our first recorded captain and secretary, Miss S.W.P.Kitcat. It was originally known as the Challenge Cup, or sometimes the County Cup, and the final was a matchplay tournament. It is our oldest trophy, and until our championship began in 1913, this was THE trophy. Over the years its format has changed, its importance has become diluted. The early winners’ names engraved on it are, quite simply, a record of our history. The first winner was M.B.Woollcombe-Boyce -- followed by Sybil Kitcat, Miss Bramwell, Phyllis Clark…. and on to Frances Mann, Margaret Joshua, Marjorie Williams, Hilda Pickup, Peggy Baker, Dorothy McLennan, Peggy Reece, Vivian Wilde and Caroline Griffiths.

Liz Rees and Sheila Whybra, from Minchinhampton (New) GC, won the prestigious County Ladies’ Peggy Fraser Salvers, played for at Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club last week (July 14th).
They just sneaked home, winning on a countback from the Henbury pairing of Liz Henniker-Heaton and Glenda Hanmer, who must count themselves as fairly unlucky as they were also pipped for the gross prize.

County Girls, Intermediates & Seniors Championships held at Knowle Golf Club Sunday 3rd July 2011
Home player Jemima Gregson won the Juniors' Championship, played at Knowle GC on Sunday (July 3rd) …. and her club team mates Caley McGinty and Ebonie Lewis took the best nett and stableford prizes respectively. Jemima's gross 70 was seven shots ahead of nearest rival Bethan Popel, the current County Champion from Long Ashton. Victoria Wakeley-Jones (Minchinhampton New) was third on 78. In the nett division Caley McGinty posted a splendid nett 66, just two shots ahead of Hannah Evill from Minchinhampton Old, and Ebonie Lewis(37 pts) was just one point ahead of Charlotte Heeps (Thornbury). The youngsters followed the Seniors' and Intermediates' Championships, won by Jan Pickersgill (Henbury) and Corrinne Durber(Minchinhampton New) respectively, ….. and showed their older colleagues just how to post really good scores! An indication of this was that the Competition Standard Scratch for the Juniors' event went down, whilst for the Seniors and Intermediates it went up!
