Second Team Results 2010

Gloucestershire v Dorset held at Broadstone GC (Dorset) on Monday 16th August 2010

The sun certainly shone for us in more ways than one at Broadstone Golf Club for our 2nd league match against Dorset on Monday 16th August. We arrived in glorious sunshine on the Sunday afternoon for a practice round as none of the players had played the course before and left on Monday evening with a well fought victory in the 26 degree heat.

The morning foursomes saw my trusty partnership of Kelly Fowler ( Shirehampton Park) and Jan Pickersgill (Henbury) lead the team to its first foursome victory 2&1, closely followed by Zoe Edwards (South Herefordshire)and Bethan Popel (Long Ashton), 3&1 and the Cotswold Edge paring of Corrinne Durber and Claire Wenman also 3&1.

For the afternoon singles, Zoe and Jan sat out but still provided some vital caddying services and Alex Saunders (Bristol & Clifton) and Jemima Gregson (Knowle) stepped up to the plate. Bethan led the way playing Sophie Keech who we had both played foursomes against in the 1st team County match week. It was therefore a well matched pairing and both players played some great golf with Bethan getting the better of her opponent 3&2. Kelly Fowler had a very close match winning 2&1 against Danielle Bradley who recently lost the 2nd flight final of the Ladies SW Championships at China Fleet to Amanda Mayne of Somerset. Claire Wenman fought a keen battle against one of the more experienced players but narrowly lost out 3&1. Alex Saunders held on bravely as her opponent hauled back an early 4 up lead to come out with a half. Jemima Gregson played some adventurous golf against a very experienced older player who was actually a member at Broadstone Golf Club but she came out on top with a truly amazing drive on the last giving her a tiny chip and put for a birdie to secure the match 2 up. Corrinne was also playing a Broadstone member but displayed true fighting spirit winning 3&2.

Overall result 7 ½ - 1 ½ to Gloucestershire.

This result now puts us for the first time in the 2nd team final against Cornwall who had 2 very convincing matches over Somerset and Devon. The date and venue are to be advised so watch this space !! We are looking to hold it at a neutral venue at a midway point sometime in September or October so if you fancy a day out please come and support!

Gloucestershire v Wiltshire held at Knowle GC on Sunday 1st August 2010

After a cloudy start, the weather cleared beautifully to give a lovely sunny day for the first of our two league matches. The course was in good condition and we were looked after very well by County Rep Carol Millhouse and Lady Captain Helen Treasure.

We got off to a great start with a clean sweep in the morning foursomes. 2 good wins from the tried and tested paring of Kelly Fowler from Shirehampton Park and Jan Pickersgill from Henbury and the home pairing or Emma Reynolds and Jemima Gregson. However the middle match of Claire Wenman of Cotswold Edge and Zoe Edwards of South Herefordshire was a much closer affair going right down to the last put on the 18th green. Despite the 3-0 morning advantage the afternoon singles started off with all matches down after the first few holes and much nail-biting going on in the buggies which the club kindly laid on for both teams.

Kelly Fowler had a very close battle and was down all the way until a string of good holes on 14,15 & 16 saw her go 1 up going down 17. A magnificent 3 wood into the raised green on 17 then clinched it for a superbly fought win 2&1. Corrinne Durber of Cotswold Edge had a similarly close battle but narrowly lost on the 18th green. Zoe Edwards played some rock steady golf and seemingly couldn’t miss a putt. A great eagle on the 14th gave her a 4up lead going into the 15th where a solid par clinched the match 4&3. Alex Saunders of Bristol & Clifton struggled a little off the tee but continued to fight bravely against another very good new junior in Charlotte Lucas, finally losing 4&3. Jemima Gregson was never fazed on her own course and took full advantage winning 4&3. Having by this stage already won the match overall, Claire Wenman came in with an added bonus half point. After being 2 down with 2 to play she kept her head beautifully and refused to give up as her opponent cracked on the last 2 holes.

Overall result 6 ½ to 2 ½ to Gloucestershire.

We now look forward to the 2nd league match vs. Dorset at Broadstone GC on Monday 16th August with great anticipation! Fingers crossed!!

Gloucestershire v Somerset held at Clevedon Golf Club Sunday 20th June 2010

We could not have had a more perfect day weather wise. Clear blue skies and stunning views across the Severn Estuary as we all stood by the 1st tee. The Course was very in good condition albeit the lack of rain meant for some very strange bounces on the rather hard fairways and subsequently there was a lot of searching for balls that had run right through them.

We had a great start in the morning foursomes. Jan Pickersgill from Henbury and Kelly Fowler from Shirehampton Park led the way in a closely fought battle winning 2&1. Corrinne Durber from Cotswold Edge and Alex Saunders from Bristol & Clifton had a convincing 6&4 victory and the Knowle pairing of Emma Reynolds and Jemima Gregson fought back bravely from 3 down with 5 to play to win 2 up on the last !!

3-0 up going into the afternoon foursomes looked good but confidence wavered a little as we lost the first 2 singles matches 3&2 and 4&3. Kelly Fowler brought home the first win with a convincing 6&5 victory over Liz South who was playing her first County match. Emma Reynolds struggled against an experienced veteran in Gill Brown losing 4&3. It was therefore left to the 2 youngsters in the side who proved fearless and both won their matches 2&1. There were a few tense moments as both Jemima and Alex went 3 up and 2 up with 3 and 2 to play respectively but they were not deterred.

A really good final result of 6-3 will hopefully set us up nicely for the 2 league matches on the 1st and 17th August against Wiltshire and Dorset. Fingers crossed!!

Gloucestershire v Worcestershire held at Brickhampton Court GC Sunday 9th May 2010

We had a dry but cold day at Brickhampton Court. Trevor Banks the Competitions Manager couldn’t have been more helpful, meeting us on the day and getting tee-times reserved and arranging a buggy too! Sue Trewin, Lady Captain was also on hand and my thanks go to both of them for their warm welcome and efficient organisation.

2 last minute drop-outs on the Worcestershire side meant that the extra players we had all got a game. Corrinne Durber bravely stepped up to the plate and played against Shelby Smart and Claire Wenman in the first foursomes match but was unable to keep the young pair in check as they came home clear winners 4&3. Kelly Fowler and Bethan Pople had an equally good game winning 4&3. Paula Crabtree and Alex Saunders got off to a nervy start losing 2 holes early on which after a closely fought middle part of the match they were unable to get back and lost 4&3. Mhari Chapman teamed up with young Jemima Gregson and her home knowledge helped them through a keenly fought battle where they were down all the way until they pipped the opposition to go one up on the last. Result 3-1 to Gloucestershire after the morning foursomes.

The afternoon singles was cut to 6 a side and Mhari and Paula kindly teamed up to play a friendly match against each other.

Shelby led the way in a closely fought battle against Katie Brown who had also played in the 1st team fixture. Recovering from a wrist injury she battled well to win 2&1. Jemima kept taking the lead but kept being reined back by the experienced Captain Mary Jane Shannon. However youth and a lot of healthy munching on dried mangoes amongst various other things did the trick and she won 3&1!  Claire and Kelly came up against 2 new youngsters who were obviously on form and playing well below their 13 and 15 handicaps as they both narrowly lost on the 18th green. Alex, despite battling with some wayward driving, putted extremely well and romped home 7&5. Bethan then brought up the rear with a very good 4&3 win against the incoming Captain Rosie Loh.

Overall result 7-3 to Gloucestershire and a very promising start to the season. Well done to all my team, it was a pleasure to watch.
