2nd Team Match Report: Friendly Match Gloucestershire V Somerset
22nd April @ Henbury Golf Club
Result 7-5
The weather was glorious and a great result for the second team at the start of the season. Two new players were introduced to the team, Victoria Wakeley-Jones (Minchinhampton) and Bethan Brown (Kendleshire) and Ann Manley (Henbury) (who just came to watch) filled in for the afternoon after Bethan Brown was unable, due to a bad knee, to play in the afternoon singles. So a good mix of experience and youth.
In morning foursomes our first two pairs of Alex Saunders (Bristol & Clifton) and Jemima Gregson (Knowle) and Claire Wenman (Cotswold Edge) and Emma Reynolds (Knowle) won quite easily 4&2. The experience of Corrinne Durber (Minchinhampton) helped her and her partner Victoria Wakelely-Jones take the Somerset pair (including Micheala Chivers who plays off 2) to 17th. Great experience for Victoria. Myself and Bethan were level par after 7 and winning easily, when Bethan’s knee prevented her from being able to make a proper swing. However, she persevered, despite being in pain and we won 2&1.
So we went into lunch 3-1 up.
The afternoon singles saw a great fight back from Somerset with the matches being drawn 4-4. Jemima Gregson lost to Micheala Chivers (4&2) which will be invaluable experience for her. Emma Reynolds fought hard eventually losing 2&1. Both Victoria Wakely-Jones and Alex Saunders won easily 6&5, Whilst Kelly Fowler (Shirehampton Park) and Claire Wenman lost 2&1 and 4&3 respectively. That left our two most experienced/oldest!! players to provided us with a victory. Ann Manley, ever the competitor, won 4&3 and was 4 over after 15 holes and Corrinne Durber who got up and down from the sand on the 18th, sinking a nasty 4 footer to win the match.
A lovely day and a great result.
