Gloucestershire Ladies' County Golf Association

County Training Squad 2017

PLAYERS   (Alphabetical order)

 Rachael Archibald

I grew up playing golf in Scotland, both inner city parkland and links.  Although I've swung a club for most of my life I only took it up when I was 14 years old.  I played for club, county and district in Scotland as a junior and I'm delighted to be getting back into county golf.

I've lived in Edinburgh, Sheffield, Preston, America and Manchester in the past 3 years and I'm now happily settled in Bristol as a member of The Bristol GC, ready to play my part in a successful 2016 and beyond for GLCGA.

Jess Brown

My name is Jessica (Jess) Brown and I'm a member at Cirencester Golf Club.  I have really enjoyed playing for Gloucestershire Girls Golf (GGG), the highlight being playing at inter counties' week 2016 at Cumberwell Park.  I'm really pleased to be part of the 2017 GLCGA training squad and am working hard to improve my game further.

Grace Connelly

My name is Grace Connelly, I'm 15 and I've been playing golf from the age of 3.  My current handicap is 4.  It's my 5th year in the England regional squad, and i aspire to progress into the elite squad.  This year I qualified for the Faldo series European finals after winning the Welsh series with one of my rounds being -4.  I then came 6th in the finals.  I hope to get a scholarship to America to carry on my dream of becoming a professional golfer.  I'm dedicated and hard-working and I'm always striving to achieve my goals.

Alex Giles

Hi, I'm Alex.  I'm 16 and play at Long Ashton Golf Club. My current handicap is 2. I've played for Gloucestershire 1st team for 3 years not and was proud to be a member of last year's team that won County Finals.  It was an amazing experience.  In 2016 I also represented England Schools against Scotland.  I currently study performance excellence in sport at Hartbury College.  Looking forward to more success with #Glos.

Jemima Gregson

I have won the junior county championship twice and for the last two years have been training with SW England select squad. I’m really looking forward to county week; it is a great week with lovely people and good golf.

     Sophie Price (left)

Hi, I'm Sophie and I'm a member of Ross on Wye Golf Club, where I'm currently Junior Captain.  I started having golf lessons when I was around 6 years old (although I apparently spent more time building sand castles in the bunkers than hitting golf balls!) and progressed to playing regularly in Club Competitions and for Gloucestershire Girls.  I had a fantastic few summer months after finishing my GCSE's in 2015, where I reduced my handicap from 16 to 8 in just over a month, became Ladies Club Champion and son Gloucestershire Girls Most Improved Golfer in my division.  I was also fortunate to be one of 6 juniors to be nominated for the Ross Gazette Young Sportsman of the Year Award which was a great experience attending the presentations with other young sports people.  I am really looking forward to playing for the GLCGA teams.  Outside of golf I'm in the 6th form at the High School for Girls in Gloucester studying Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Business, and hope to carry on to university to study Accounting, and also keeping up with my golf.

Jane Rees

I started playing golf at the age of 29 after finishing my athletic and netball career.  I have been a member of Hendon golf club since 1987, and played for Middlesex for many years.  I moved to Gloucestershire in April 2015 and am now a member of Minchinhampton Golf Club.  I won the 2008 Welsh Seniors championship and thus started my Senior international golfing life, competing for Wales in the Senior Home International matches every year since 2008.  I have also won the Spanish Open Seniors in 2010, the Welsh Open/Closed Seniors championship in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.  In June 2014 I won the European Senior Championship.

 Sam Round

Hi, I'm Sam and I've been a member at Cotswold Hills Golf Club since 2004.  This year I'm making the switch to Gloucestershire having played for Oxfordshire since I was 10 years old.  I worked in the golf industry for 8 years, in golf development - trying to encourage as many people as possible to take up the game i love.  My golfing highlights include captaining the England Ladies Universities team at Home Internationals and playing in a LET event.  Away from golf i enjoy skiing, playing netball, touch rugby and anything anyone suggests giving a go!

Anna Russell

Hi, I’m Anna, my handicap is 8 and my home club is Cotswold Hills. I have been playing golf for  5 years since I was 11. After playing the last few years for the county under 18 team I made my debut in the Ladies' second team in 2012. That year I also finished 9th gross in the Welsh under 16 girls and won the gross & net in the second division of the Ladies' County Championships.

Alex Saunders

Ffion Tynan

Hi I'm Ffion, 11 years of age, playing off 8, and  My Home Club is Minchinhampton GC. I started playing golf when I was 8 and have been lucky to play golf at many fantastic places. Winning The Girls US KIDS European Championships in Scotland in 2012 was definitely one my highlights to date.

I had a great time playing for the  County Girls and the Ladies 2nd team last season, and really enjoyed getting to know all the ladies in the county squad. I am really looking forward to the coming season and hopefully playing for the county again. I am also a member of the Wales Girls Regional Wales Squad - CYMRU AM BYTH!

Laura Whittard

Hi, I'm Laura Whittard and I started playing golf when I was 9.  I am a member of Minchinhampton Old Golf Club where I am currently the ladies champion for the 2nd time and I was the Second Division runner up of the Ladies County Championships in 2015.  My handicap is 8 and i attend Hartpury College doing a Level 3 Sports Diploma in golf.  I was a county junior player and I am now looking forward to playing in the ladies county squad. I am currently a support worker helping with the disabled and I am looking forward to furthering my career.

Andra Knight

Hi, I’ve been a member at Cotswold Hills since I took up golf in 2004.  I now play off 9.  I have served on club committee in various roles (comp Sec is definitely the most time-consuming!) and was Ladies' Captain in 2011, then served as Alliance rep for three years, and have just completed three years as club A Team Captain.

My sporting background includes lots of tennis; I still play a decent social game, and compete for Glos vets on occasion. I played good hockey many years ago at school and university and then socially, until a knee injury stopped me and led me to golf….  Every cloud has a silver lining!  My professional background?  I'm a retired physiotherapist with specialist interest in neurological rehabilitation.

I enjoy supporting, motivating and encouraging individuals and teams and am looking forward to another fun year watching our amazingly talented squad achieve lots of great things!

Su Mallon

Vice Captain

Hi, I'm Su and I am a member of Minchinhampton Golf Club (New) which I joined on retirement after 35 years in the Ministry of Defence where I enjoyed a variety of roles and where one of my highlights was having an active role in managing the RAF display programme which included The Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and other RAF display teams.  I have always been active in sports from competitive swimming in my formative years to netball.  During my MOD career I played netball and managed netball teams before getting involved in golf in 1993 assisting my husband Brian in various roles when he was an Oxfordshire Golf Captain.  I finally took up golf myself in 2003 and it was not long before I was involved in various committee duties, which continued when i moved to S Gloucestershire.  I am currently the Minchinhampton County Delegate.  I am excited and enthusiastic about joining the squad and look forward to the challenges ahead.

Alison Kelly

Hi, I'm Ali. I have been playing golf for more years than I care to remember.  I played my first ever county game for Essex 2nd team over 35 years ago and have played county golf (with some gaps) ever since.

Carole Stratford President

I first played golf at West Wilts in Wiltshire and subsequently was a member of the Wiltshire County Team.  When I moved to Bristol I joined Long Ashton Golf Club and played for 15 years in the Gloucestershire Team, receiving County Colours in 1986.  I was a County Selector for four years from 2006.  My current handicap is 9.

Kirsty Taylor

Hi, I'm Kirsty.  After a successful amateur career culminating in playing in the Curtis Cup I turned professional in 1995. I had 15 happy years playing The LET. Highlights being winning The 2005 Welsh Open and finishing Runner Up in The 2000 Weetabix Ladies British Open. After retiring 6 years ago I'm enjoying teaching freelance at Westonbirt Golf Club and The Players. It's great to be involved with Gloucestershire and to work with such a talented lovely group of girls. My other interests are gardening, skiing, biking and watching all sports.
