Exciting Finish to Finals Day

There were plenty of supporters and caddies enjoying Finals Day along with the players at Filton Golf Club on Sunday.

Thankfully, Saturday's downpour had cleared up and competitors enjoyed crisp, bright conditions for their rounds.

First off was the play off for the Runners Up spot in the Mercia Castle Competition, Jeanette Patch (Minchinhampton New) won with 35 points, beating Gaynor Bridgman and Nicky Robertson both from Westonbirt Golf Club.

There was lots of interest in the Final of the Watson Williams Cup, the experienced  pairing of Sue Elliot and Caroline Hall (Henbury) got off to a quick start, establishing an early 3 hole lead. Sam Round and Claudia Ovens (Cotswold Hills) chipped away and reduced the deficit only to lose the match to a birdie on the 15th, just after the lovely green woodpecker had darted across the 14th fairway!

It would be fair to say that there were plenty of pre-match nerves as the players gathered for the Final of the County Foursomes Cups. Andy Jenkins and Roz Morris (Chipping Sodbury), were 2 up after 4, the first halved hole being the 9th. The match was nip and tuck and then just as it was starting to look like a win maybe in the bag on the 17th  Bristol and Clifton (Vicky Reed and Linda Meaton) chipped in from off the green, the Chipping Sodbury pair replied by holing a snaking down hill putt across the green. The B&C pair played text book golf on the 18th and 19th to take the title to the delight of their supporters!

County President Sue Rawles welcomed everyone to the Presentation, she thanked Filton Golf Club for their hospitality and also thanked the caddies, spectators and especially the Referees Adrian Lee and Carol Newton for giving up their time.

She congratulated everyone on qualifying for the Finals and said she felt honoured to be presenting the Watson Williams Cup to Caroline whom she still remembers playing a magnificent 4 iron into the green to set up the win for the Curtis Cup at Hoylake in 1992 and Sue Elliot whom Sue remembers watching on the tour in the early 90's. Caroline thanked everyone and said they had enjoyed playing with Sam and Claudia.

Linda Meaton (Bristol & Clifton) also thanked the County for the Competition, she still couldn't believe that they had won and complimented the ladies from Chipping Sodbury on a great match. Linda also gave special thanks to Carol for refereeing their match so proficiently.
