A brilliant day at The Kendleshire for the second team match against Somerset. The sun shone on what was a fabulous day of amazing golf from both sides. But Gloucestershire won the day 7- 2. The awesome team shown are - left to right : Kate Thurlow, Hannah Brown Pearce, Megan Bartlett, Jess Brown, Grace Connelly, Rachael Archibald, and me your Vice Captain Su Mallon.
A very hot day for a very hot team at the Kendleshire playing the Hollows and the Ruffet nines 1-18 against a very strong and competitive Somerset team. The morning started with the foursomes and Grace and Rachael led the way, a closely fought match between Carys Parker, who some of you may remember as being part of Glos until they moved home last year. A good start going 2up thru 4 and then all square by 6 and then 1 down thru 11 but by the 14 brought it back making a birdie on the 16 to win 3/2. Following them were our rookies Megan and Kate, playing a very experienced pair from Somerset and after nervous start settled into a nice rhythm. Unfortunately they were up against a very strong pairing and although they brought it back from 3 down to take the pair down the 18th, lost the match. Our final pairing was Hannah and Jess, they were a strong team and took the lead early on going 4 up through 7 and basically held the lead until the 15th when Somerset fought back and took Hannah and Jess to the 18th but the ever confident pair were able to hold onto their lead winning 2up on the 18th.
The score for the morning foursomes 2 - 1
The confidence of the morning foursomes gave the team the momentum for the afternoon singles. Grace leading the team with a tightly fought match but maintained her lead throughout winning 4 and 3 which quickly fed back to the others,
Megan played against her nemesis of the morning round and her determination not be caught a second time held throughout, she quickly secured a 6 and 5 win.
Kate with her determination played a very tight match against a tough opponent both securing birdies to win holes, never being more then one away in either direction. Unfortunately Somerset took the victory on the 17th winning 2 up with one to play, so very close.
Then to Hannah who although did not start out well, soon put on her determination head and turned it around, to secure a victory of 5 and 4.
Rachael against another past Glos member, Kim Parker, sister of Carys, Rachael took the lead very early on which she maintained throughout winning 6 and 4.
Jess playing yet another very tight match, both players winning holes with birdies and neither being more than 1 in either direction throughout their match but this time we secured victory on the 17th winning 2 and 1.
The score for the singles 5 -1
Final score 7-2 This therefore means that Gloucestershire is in the Final which will be played at Tiverton Golf Club on 1st Oct against Cornwall. A brilliant day on a testing but beautiful golf course in wonderful sunshine played in the right spirit.
Thank you to Dawn Rimmer who stood by as reserve. County President Carole Stratford for being the starter, Andra whose help was invaluable and the support of Janice, Ali and those parents who came along to support.
