2022 COUNTY CHAMP CROWNED
On a drizzly, cold first day of May, 8 golfers took to the fairways to try and become the County Champion and 2nd Flight Champion of Gloucestershire.
In the Championship Semi-Final Bethan Popel (Long Ashton GC) played against Megan Bartlett (Knowle GC) and Alex Saunders (Bristol & Clifton) played Jo Hodge (Knowle GC). In the 2nd Flight Championship Semi-Final, Lorna Evans (Minchinhampton GC) played junior Sophie Williams (Knowle GC) and Chloe Lloyd (Knowle GC) played Rachael Howell (Long Ashton GC). Dealing with wet and cold conditions, it was layers and brollies that were essential during the morning session and keeping clubs and grips dry proved to be quite a challenge but by the time the matches had finished, the rain had subsided.
Bethan beat Megan 6&4 and Jo beat Alex 4&2. Lorna beat Sophie 6&5 and Chloe beat Rachael 3&2.
The Finals were set and they proved to be very close with Bethan (who was defending her 2021 Championship title) eventually winning on the 16th. Chloe had to play to the 17th to get her deserved win - so CONGRATULATIONS go to Bethan our 2022 Champion and to Chloe our 2022 2nd Flight Champion.
This year's Championship attracted a record number of competitors and it was great to see so many of the up and coming juniors battling with the more experienced Gloucestershire golfers.
Our thanks go to Bristol & Clifton Golf Club for hosting the 3 day Championship, to Matt Hawker and his green staff for ensuring the course was in tip top condition, to Alex and Mark the house/catering team for keeping everyone fed and watered, to Sue Beswick and her steely team of ball spotters, to B&C's County Delegate Jane Watts who assisted the County Execs, to all the referees who assisted the players when they needed advice, to Jane Rowell our Competition Secretary for organising the competition, and to Karen Rix our County President for starting everyone on all three days and to all the spectators who came to support all the competitors, come rain or shine!
