England Golf South West Region Foursomes at Weston Super Mare Golf Club, 4th October 2018

Weston Super Mare Golf Club was shrouded in sea mist at 7.30am on the morning of the popular South West Foursomes event. A field of 110 players from all 6 counties of the South West Region were competing. The field comprised some very low handicappers, County players and club golfers. The club manager Graham Humphries and Lady Captain Zena Balcombe had worked tirelessly to host this event in Somerset. Thankfully the mist lifted to allow the event to start on time at 9am and a beautiful autumn day developed.  The course presented really well and the greens were good, many players complimenting the green keepers. Amanda Mayne (2) and Gill Brown (6) from Saltford and Burnham & Berrow Golf Clubs were leading with a gross 79 despite setting off in cold misty conditions. Last year's winner and SW Chairman Jane Southcombe (4) with a new partner Harriet Teversham (1) Yeovil GC came in with a tremendous gross 74, to win the SW Foursomes candlesticks. Jane had polished them especially to return them. Christine Harris and Mary Dolman Saltford GC won the nett with 72. The Stableford category was won by Monica Seeley and Carly Frost from Parkstone GC Dorset with 35 points.       24 placement prizes were presented. This event moves to Wiltshire County in 2019..

South West Bowmaker

Ladies gather from all over the South West

The early starters at Lansdown found themselves donning extra layers of clothing when they arrived for a bright but cool and crisp South West Autumn Bowmaker.

The President thanked everyone for playing, especially as this competition very nearly didn't happen at all. Sue recalled the course at Lansdown being easy level walking and no water so hopefully there were not too many lost balls today.

Sue Rawles thanked Gloucestershire Competition Secretary Sue Johns for running the competition so efficiently and she in turn offered her thanks to Club Captain John Butler, a multi-tasker who was at hand all day; she would have been lost without him!

Sue Rawles went on to thank everyone in the pro shop and kitchen, and to Lansdown Golf Club for hosting the competition today. It was especially nice to see our friends from the other counties within the South West region and she hoped they would all continue to support the SW competitions in 2019.

Only 3 points separated the top three teams with the local team from Lansdown GC coming out on top; the winning team complimented the green keepers on the excellent greens and expressed their gratitude to Sue Johns for the very smooth running of the competition.

Full results appear on the GLCGA website.

From Linda Carruthers, Gloucestershire's SW Representative

The South West Australian Spoons Regional Final took place at Thornbury Golf Club on Tuesday 19th July.

On the hottest day of the year to date (35C!) 44 pairs took part from all counties in the South West. (All competitors had won their club event to be at the regional final played between April & June).

Thanks  to Thornbury GC staff and members for a very successful day and looking after all the players in the hot conditions. Particular mention must be given to Kate Williams for helping me and organising cold drinks and wet flannels for over heated players. Thank you to the Lady Captain, Di Geraghty, Rob Ford the starter and all the ball spotters.

Well done to all the players for completing their round and and taking part in the Regional Final.
