GGG - 2022 News & Results

On a wonderful calm and sunny day, twenty-six girls competed in this year's Girls' Championship at Stinchcombe Hill Golf Club which was run alongside the GGU U16/U14 Championship.

Issy Hopkins (Bristol & Clifton GC), with a gross 72 (+1) was crowned our new Junior County Champion - interestingly back in 2020 when Issy was crowned champion at Gloucester Golf Club, she shot +1.

Sofia Benitez (Bristol & Clifton GC) was our runner-up and she also won the U16 and U14 Best Gross categories and secured a place in the West of England U16’s Open Championship which will take place at Cotswold Hills GC on 18 September.

Rosie Boyle  (Long Ashton GC) was crowned our new Nett Champion with a nett 64 (gross 86).  She was also the U16 and U14 nett winner and won the Little Spots Salver which is presented to the winner of the Stableford competition which we run alongside the Championship medal competition.

There were some incredible scores posted and the girls never cease to amaze us with their talent and attitude on and off the course.  Congratulations to all the girls who competed and well played everyone!

Thanks go to Deryck Butler (Gloucestershire Golf Union) who was our starter for the day, to all the referees who were on hand to advise on any rulings, to Gail Bidder and her team at Stinchcombe Hill GC and to Debbie Casling, Chairman, Karen Rix, President and Jamie McCormick, County Coach who came along plus all the parents and supporters who enjoyed some incredible golf played in beautiful weather.

SECOND MATCH OF THE 2022 SEASON:  RESULT - 24 April, Gloucester GC

The sun was shining when the girls all tee'd off, but there was a distinct breeze which was quite cold when the sun went behind the clouds - however this didn't dampen the enthusiasm of all the girls as they had been looking forward to this match for the last two years, as Covid meant it had been cancelled in both 2020 and 2021.

Although the breeze made it cold for spectators at times, the girls plotted their way around the course and by the time they got to the top of heart attack hill, there was a certain glow on everyone's cheeks!

The format of the match was handicapped singles and only the first two Gloucestershire pairs received shots, with our rookies, Sofia and Lucy both having to give shots: 3 and 19, yes 19 respectively.  Our girls battled hard with Millie bringing home a winning point and both the rookies brought home halves.  Although the other matches were close we lost 6:2.  The match was played in great spirit with all the girls chatting and smiling and the Gloucestershire girls were great ambassadors for the county.

Our thanks go to Gloucester GC for hosting our match; to the greenkeepers who have produced a course which has improved immesaurably over the past couple of years and to Nicky and her house team who kept the teams, their supporters and parents fed and watered throughout the day.

Well done to Sofia and Lucy for competing in their first match for Gloucestershire - we hope you enjoyed the experience; thanks go to the other team members for playing with smiles on your faces irrespective of the outcome of your matches - you're all great golfers, and to Karen Rix, our President and Ali Kelly, Vice President and Mariella Buchanan (our reserve) who came along to support the girls.  Thank you to all the parents who willingly chauffeur their daughters to matches - thank you all for your commitment to the development of your girls' game!

Congratulations to Worcestershire & Herefordshire Girls on the win - we're already looking forward to travelling up the motorway to play you in 2023!

FIRST MATCH OF THE 2022 SEASON RESULT - 6 March, Forest Hills GC

On a very very cold Sunday, the Gloucestershire Girls played the U16 Gloucestershire Boys at Forest Hills GC in our annual friendly match.  We haven't played them the last couple of years, due to COVID and bad weather, but this year, even though it was absolutely freezing, the match was going to go ahead!

We had a team of 12 girls representing Gloucestershire with handicaps ranging from 7.4 up to 19.6.  The boys, had  a team of much lower handicapped players and when James Tuck, their Coach told them how many shots they would have to give the girls, there was a silence followed by 'how many!".  However the match didn't go our way even with the shots the girls had - the boys hit the ball a 'country mile' and although they weren't always straight, they certainly had length advantage over the girls.

All the girls played their hearts out and didn't give up even when they found themselves down and the spirit in which the game was played was great to watch.

One day, we will get the better of the boys, but for now we'll accept the loss and learn from the experience.

Thank you for Forest Hills GC for hosting the match, to the greenkeepers who should be commended on the condition of the course, to the caterers for feeding the teams and the parents/supporters throughout the day and to James Tuck the GGU coach and Director of Golf at Forest Hills for organising the match with the GGU Secretary.

The course has undergone some great improvements over the past year and is definitely worth a visit!
