South West Junior Inter-Counties Day 1

(Rookies, Jasmine, Ezme & Poppy who all won their foursomes matches at their first SWJIC tournament!)

----------------------------------------------------------

An early start for Team Glos who were first on the tee versus Devon on Day 1.

Our Singles players all hit great shots off the first tee in blustery weather, which progressively got worse as they navigated around the course.

Mariella was out first, Millie second and Taylor completed our Singles players for the morning session. In the foursomes, Neve our Junior Captain partnered rookie Jasmine Ren from Cotswold Hills and this proved to be a really successful partnership.

Our final pairing were Long Ashton's Rosie and Frances.

In our Singles matches we had to give 3, 2 and 2 shots and in the foursomes matches, we had to give 12 and 11 shots.

We lost our match 2 : 3 but this didn't reflect that quality of golf played. Mariella lost 4&3, Millie lost 2 down and Taylor won 4&3. Neve and Jasmine won 3&2 and Rosie and Frances lost 4&3.

Whilst disappointed to lose their first match, the girls tucked into some lunch and got ready to take on our neighbours Somerset in the afternoon session.

We had a bit of time over the lunch period, to gather our thoughts and we made a quick call to Mike Jeffery, our "manifestation guru"!! Last year at Cumberwell Park, when we won, he said he had manifested our win, so the girls called him and he talked us through a quick manifestation session ...... and it worked, because our afternoon result was in our favour.

Our first two singles players, Mariella and Neve both won their matches, 8&6 and 1 up respectively and Taylor lost on the 18th.

Our foursomes pairings of Millie and another rookie Ezme Counsell (Long Ashton) were 'pumped' and were always up in their match, winning on the 14th. The final foursomes pairing had a fantastic match. Frances and another rookie Poppy Rowe (Bristol & Clifton) found themselves 4 down and were struggling to overcome the Somerset girls, but they just kept battling away and soon started pegging them back and after some fantastic putting from Frances and great drives from Poppy were going down the 17th 1 up - what an incredible turnaround. All they had to do was maintain this margin and that's what they did winning on the 18th hole.

It was a great afternoon winning the match 4:1 and the girls who had to battle to the 18th found themselves enjoying a bit of sunshine after a very blustery, windy and wet day - so well done Team Glos for not giving up, when most of us would have done!
