Wednesday 20th August at Filton Golf Club saw the South West Seniors do battle in the South West Counties Gross Team Event where a team of 4 play a medal round and the best 3 scores count.
Playing conditions were tough with overcast skies and intermittent drizzle. Despite the less than ideal weather, the Gloucestershire team of Jane Rees & Wendy Bond (Minchinhampton) and Emma Brereton & Ali Kelly (Cirencester) took to the course in full waterproofs for the first holes. The course presented a stern test, with a combination of sloping lies, firm ground, making club selection and shot execution critical. Many players found themselves needing ot adapt quickly, especially when it came to managing unpredictable bounces and roll-outs on approach shots.
Overall it was a day that tested patience, adaptability and short game resilience and the scores reflected the tricky conditions. A gritty round was played by all with Jane Rees carding the lowest gross score of 78 . Congratulations go to the Wiltshire team of Katie Dove Meadows, Tracey Sculley, Gill Loughrey and Marion Skinner who won the main overall team trophy.
Runners up were Dorset who had the same score as Gloucestershire but just pipped us on count back, followed by Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
Our thanks go to Sue Elliott, General Manager and her team at Filton GC for being great hosts, Jane Rowell for stepping in to run the comp on the day and Corrinne Durber for the photos and this report.
