Death of Ruth Porter

It is with much sadness that we heard of Ruth Porter's death on Tuesday.

A member of Long Ashton GC, Ruth was a stalwart of the County Team in the 1960's. She was County Champion 13 times, and English Champion on three occasions. For many the abiding memory of Ruth will always be her putt, at Royal Porthcawl GC, which won the Curtis Cup for us back in that era.

There will be a private funeral, and a request has been made that there should be no letters.

From the LGU website:

"Everyone at the Ladies' Golf Union was saddened to hear of the death of Ruth Slark (nee Porter) on 15 September 2014.

British Girls' Champion in 1956, Ruth went on to win the English Championship in 1959, 1961 and 1965, and was capped for England many times, particularly on 10 occasions in the Home International Matches.

She won her first Great Britain & Ireland cap in the Vagliano Trophy match against the Continent of Europe in 1959, and played in two further Vagliano matches in 1961 and  1965.

Ruth also represented GB&I in 3 Curtis Cup matches - in 1960 at Lindrick in Ireland, 1962 at Broadmoor, Colorado Springs, USA and 1964 at Royal Porthcawl in Wales. She was also capped in the 1963 Commonwealth team in the tournament which was played in Australia, and followed that tournament by finishing runner-up in the Australian Championship.

A member of a number of clubs, including Long Ashton, Walton Heath and Burnham & Berrow, Ruth will be much missed by her golfing friends, particularly the ladies of Gloucestershire, where she was county champion on no less than 13 occasions."
